| Alleghanyite: brown, translucent xtls, < 1 mm across. Micro crystals of alleghanyite {(Mn,Mg)5(SiO4)2(OH)2} with willemite and other minerals forming a seam on Sterling Hill ore.
The pale tan to beige mineral surrounding the crystals is probably altered, massive alleghanyite. Some of the surrounding material is willemite, easy to spot with a short-wave UV lamp. Locality: Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, New Jersey. Photos taken using a Mini-VID USB eyepiece camera (older 1.3 megapixel model). Photo index |
